Levels of Education

Career, Technical, & Adult Education Centers, Colleges, and Universities all offer a variety of levels of education. For my exploration of health occupation class, the students are expected to identify types of education and training levels: on the job training(OJT), health science technology education (HSTE), Associates of Arts, (AA), Bachelors of Science (BS), Bachelors of Arts (BA), Master of Science (MS).  The definition for each is listed below.

OJT

On-the-job training is just that, training that you receive while on the job. For the high school students in my district, cooperative education includes paid in-school employment-related instruction. Instead of the students learning in the classroom, the students are at a worksite location and will receive a paycheck at the end of the pay period. Like with all classes and jobs, the student has certain criteria they must meet in order to continue in the program.

HSTE

Health science technology education are programs that prepare students for immediate employment in the healthcare field after graduation. Many postsecondary(education after high school) include training at a career/technical school or community college.

AA

An Associates of Arts degree is awarded by a technical school or community college after completion of a prescribed two-year course of study.

BS

A Bachelor of Science degree is awarded by a college or university after completion of a prescribed course of study that lasts four or more years.

BA

A Bachelor of Arts degree is awarded by a college or university after completion of a prescribed course of study that lasts four or more years.

MS

A Masters’s of Science degree is awarded by a college or university after completion of one or more years beyond a bachelor’s degree.

Although the standards for this class do not mention doctorate, doctoral, or doctor’s degrees, I still require my students to know the requirements. This degree is awarded by a college or university after completion of two or more years of work beyond a Master’s degree. They may also require four to six years of additional study.

Teaching Tips

  • Use the bonus Vocabulary Rating Scale included in the Levels of Education resource to gauge prior knowledge.
  • Have students write down the correct term.
  • Assign a writing assignment that calls for the students to use at least half the term in their story.

As an elective teacher, students feel like they do not have to learn when they come to my class. In their mind, electives equal all fun, no learning. I like to tell them that in my class, we have fun first then learn a little. Having options for the students to choose from makes all the difference when it comes to effort and effective learning.

  1. Hi!
I have found occasionally in CTE students do goof off! I love the things you have created because I am encouraging my students to stretch and learn. I encourage them to realize this course is not “tough” but can be very beneficial. Having access to your library has given me a breath of fresh air to help kids (High Schoolers) let go and explore!
