Careers in Healthcare

What is this class about?

What middle school student wants to take a class about careers in the healthcare field? If your school is anything like my school, the students get a chance to choose their electives each year. They get a form to fill out where they choose from several different courses. They are required to list their choices in order from most desired to least desired. My school has a small list of classes to choose from such as Ag, Art, Band, Business, Chorus, Health Occupations, and Physical Education aka PE.

When some students look at the list, they immediately put my class as their last choice. It’s often because they think we will spend the whole semester talking about careers in the healthcare field. That is not the case. Not only do we cover healthcare careers, but we also discuss; the history of health, medical math, wellness, body organization, medical terminology, basic first aid, preparing for the world of work, and much more.

Keep it Simple

Because of Covid-19 restrictions, I cut down on the time spent in the careers in healthcare unit. Typically, my students would do individual and group research and projects. Since I am teaching using a hybrid method, I wanted to make it easier for both my students at home and in the classroom. Instead of the elaborate research project I normally a

ssign, I created a simple worksheet that would allow them to still do research but in a more condensed way.

My students at home were able to complete the digital version of the worksheet right in their Google Class

room™, while my brick and mortar students completed the assignment on

paper.

Depending on how long your class period is, the students can get the research done in one sitting. All the information needed for your students to complete the assignment can be found on one page. Career One Stop allows the student to look up the healthcare career and narrow it down by state. You can have your students research your state or a state that they wish to live in.
